Canada has 10 provinces and 3 territories. The provinces, from west to east, are British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. The three territories in the north are Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
Provinces get their powers from the constitution; territories get theirs from the federal government. Nunavut, created in 1999, is the largest and Prince Edward Island the smallest. Ontario has the most people, and Ottawa, the national capital, is in Ontario too.
Canada is the second-largest country in the world by area, after Russia, and has the longest coastline of any country, on the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic oceans. Its only land neighbour is the United States, along the world's longest international border.
This map uses the Lambert conformal conic projection, as Statistics Canada does, so the north isn't stretched the way it is on web maps.
