Spain's autonomous communities

Spain is divided into 17 autonomous communities, each with its own parliament and government, plus two autonomous cities on the coast of North Africa: Ceuta and Melilla. The communities are split again into 50 provinces.

Castile and León is the largest community by area, and Andalusia has the most people. Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia each have a language of their own alongside Spanish.

The shape of Spain

Spain covers most of the Iberian Peninsula, which it shares with Portugal to the west, and meets France and Andorra along the Pyrenees in the north. Madrid sits almost in the middle. The Balearic Islands lie in the Mediterranean to the east.

The Canary Islands are in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa, about 1,000 km south-west of the mainland. Like most maps of Spain, this one shows them in a box at the bottom left.

Map of Spain questions

If you have more questions, feel free to contact us

Can I print this map of Spain?

Yes. Choose A4 or Letter and download the PDF, or download a PNG. It's free to print for class, work or travel planning, with or without the names.

Is there a blank map of Spain?

Yes. Turn off "Autonomous community names" and "Capital and major cities" before you download, and you get a blank outline map with the autonomous community borders only.

Why are the Canary Islands in a box?

They are far to the south-west, off Africa. Drawn in place, they would leave most of the map as empty sea, so they're shown in an inset.
