Japan's 47 prefectures

Japan is divided into 47 prefectures: Tokyo Metropolis, Hokkaido, the two urban prefectures of Osaka and Kyoto, and 43 others. They are often grouped into eight regions: Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kansai, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu with Okinawa.

Hokkaido is by far the largest prefecture and Kagawa, on Shikoku, the smallest. Tokyo has the most people, and the greater Tokyo area is home to almost a third of the country.

The shape of Japan

Japan is an island country in the Pacific, off the east coast of Asia. Four main islands make up most of its land: Honshu, the largest, then Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. Thousands of smaller islands stretch south-west to Okinawa and Taiwan. Mount Fuji, the highest mountain, stands on Honshu west of Tokyo.

This map draws Japan's borders as Japan does. It includes the southern Kuril Islands, which Japan calls the Northern Territories and Russia administers.

Map of Japan questions

If you have more questions, feel free to contact us

Can I print this map of Japan?

Yes. Choose A4 or Letter and download the PDF, or download a PNG. It's free to print for class, work or travel planning, with or without the names.

Is there a blank map of Japan?

Yes. Turn off "Prefecture names" and "Capital and major cities" before you download, and you get a blank outline map with the prefecture borders only.

Does the map show all of Japan's islands?

It shows the four main islands and the island chains down to Okinawa. A few remote islands far out in the Pacific, such as Minamitorishima, are off the edge so the rest of the map stays large enough to read.
