Italy is divided into 20 regions, each with its own capital. Five of them have special autonomy, with more powers of their own: Aosta Valley, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Sicily and Sardinia. The regions are split again into provinces and more than 7,800 municipalities.
Lombardy, around Milan, has the most people. Sicily is the largest region by area, and Aosta Valley, in the Alps on the border with France and Switzerland, is the smallest.
Italy is the boot-shaped peninsula reaching into the Mediterranean from southern Europe, with the islands of Sicily and Sardinia off its toe and its west coast. The Alps run along its northern border and the Apennines down its length. The Po, Italy's longest river, crosses the plain of the north to the Adriatic.
Two small countries sit entirely inside Italy: San Marino, in the hills near Rimini, and Vatican City, within Rome.
