The 18 regions of France

France has 18 regions: 13 in Europe, including the island of Corsica, and 5 overseas: Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Réunion and Mayotte. The overseas regions are as much a part of France as Brittany or Normandy, and are shown in boxes on the left of the map.

The mainland regions were merged from 22 into 13 in 2016, so older maps show more of them. Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the largest mainland region and Île-de-France, around Paris, has the most people.

The shape of France

Mainland France is often called the Hexagon for its six-sided shape. It borders Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Spain and Andorra, with coasts on the English Channel, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. French Guiana, in South America, also borders Brazil and Suriname.

Mont Blanc, in the Alps on the border with Italy, is the highest mountain in Western Europe.

Can I print this map of France?

Yes. Choose A4 or Letter and download the PDF, or download a PNG. It's free to print for class, work or travel planning, with or without the names.

Is there a blank map of France?

Yes. Turn off "Region names" and "Capital and major cities" before you download, and you get a blank outline map with the region borders only.

Why does the map have boxes on the left?

They hold France's five overseas regions, in the Caribbean, South America and the Indian Ocean. Each is drawn at a scale that makes it readable next to the mainland.
